IVLP GOLD STARS’ TOUR: ALUMNI CONNECTING THE WORLD

A Multi-Regional Project

These visitors are invited to the United States under the auspices of the Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program. Their program is arranged by the World Learning Visitor Exchange Program.

PROJECT BACKGROUND

The Office of International Visitors created a special project entitled the “IVLP Gold Stars’ Tour: Alumni Connecting the World,” to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the ongoing partnership between the Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) and the National Council for International Visitors (NCIV). For this 2-week project, 18 IVLP alumni were selected from around the world based on significant achievements in their countries or local communities as a direct result of their IVLP experiences. The program opens in Washington, DC, just prior to the NCIV National Meeting—an annual gathering of IVLP program partners and NCIV members that serves as an opportunity to exchange ideas, develop knowledge, and cultivate skills in support of citizen diplomacy and the IVLP. These alumni will play an integral role in the NCIV National Meeting by sharing insights about the impact of their IVLP experience on their work.

Following the Washington DC program, the IVLP alumni will return to communities around the country that were part of their original IVLP programs. These visits will be hosted and arranged by the NCIV members (Councils for International Visitors) in each community. For the final stop on their Gold Star tour, the alumni will regroup in Tampa, Florida, for a leadership summit and farewell activities.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

The Department of State has outlined the following specific objectives for the project:

· Examine the direct impact the International Visitor Leadership Program has on participants, their communities, and their home countries;

· Raise visibility and celebrate the accomplishments of the NCIV network in its work with the Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program;

· Promote ongoing linkages between IVLP alumni and U.S. organizations and professional resources;

· Provide new professional development and networking opportunities for returning IVLP alumni; and

· Celebrate the commemoration of February 16, 2011 as Citizen Diplomacy Day, to be officially declared in 2011.

Professional Background: Mr. Adami’s work in the fields of ethnic affairs and affirmative action brought him to the United States on the 2001 International Visitor Leadership Program entitled, “Promoting Tolerance: A Global Challenge.” Upon return to Brazil, Mr. Adami initiated an internet discussion group, connecting African-American and African- Brazilian activists, which eventually became a central forum for exchanging information and ideas on fighting racism, promoting tolerance, and legal issues pertaining to affirmative action. In his legal work, Mr. Adami has defended and fought for minority rights, serving as the principal litigator on some of the most crucial cases for affirmative action in higher education, denouncing and working to end institutional racism in several large organizations, including private banks, oil companies, and supermarkets. His civil public inquiry on the non-implementation of the federal law, which establishes that the teaching of the history of Africa and Afro-Brazilian culture is mandatory in Brazilian schools (History of Africa Law), reached all of the Brazil’s 5,400 municipalities. In his current ombudsman role, he has sent inquires on the History of Africa Law as well as affirmative action programs to 1,200 public, private and religious higher education institutions and 250 federal administration organs throughout Brazil .
